In addition
to funding Accelerated Reader, Carmel Hill supplies
its schools with enough high quality literature
to support optimal implementation of Accelerated
Reader. Books are purchased for school libraries,
which receive further upgrades through the provision
of automation and training for librarians. As children
become more enthusiastic readers, the library becomes
the hub of activity.
Librarians and schools are allowed a broad range
of choice in their book selection. Carmel Hill and
partner schools ensure that purchased books will
align with curriculum requirements and meet student
needs by providing an appropriate level of reading
challenge. Schools are encouraged to select books
from a wide variety of genres, with a good mix of
fiction and nonfiction material.
In addition to assessing book needs, Carmel Hill
examines the technology status of
partner schools and provides assistance to schools
that are committed to sustaining and supporting
technology. Carmel Hill supplies computers and
printers so that students can take Accelerated
Reader quizzes easily and efficiently. The Carmel
Hill Fund staff work in partner schools every
day to maintain the technology we supply, guide
the implementation of Accelerated Reader, and
motivate teachers and students to strive for increasingly
effective reading practice.
Through the powerful combination of access to
high quality literature and a motivational program
like Accelerated Reader, schools can foster a
love of reading in their students. During the
2006-2007 academic year, the 13,000 students involved
in Carmel Hill’s New York City project read
over one billion words, and dozens of students
became members of the ‘Million Words Read’
club.
