Evaluation of 2005-2006 School Results
Here's what teachers in Carmel Hill
schools have to say about Accelerated Reader.
“We can safely say that students are talking
about non-fiction information with a higher interest
level and background knowledge.”
“Those children who have excelled in AR
have excelled across the board with better comprehension
when reading.”
“The amount of reading has increased immensely.
The students bring books to indoor recess instead
of watching videos. More students walk around
the school with books in their hands!”
“This program has helped with the morale
in the building. Teachers are celebrating their
status as Model and Master Class. There is a sense
that making this achievement, you’re part
of an elite literacy circle.”
“I have worked with K-8 grades this year
utilizing the Ren Learn program. I have seen students
in all grades, mainstream, special ed, and ELL
show excitement and enthusiasm for reading and
quizzing….This program fosters independence
and the students are so proud when they receive
immediate feedback.”
The sites that are most strongly implementing
Accelerated Reader have already noticed the culture
of reading that has developed in their schools.
When properly guided and nurtured, this enthusiasm
for reading leads to improved reading ability:
• During the 2005 to 2006 school year, students
at PS 175 Henry Highland Garnet in New York averaged
an increase of 24 percentile ranks as measured
by Renaissance Learning’s STAR Reading diagnostic
test. This gain was one of the largest single
year gains ever recorded by Renaissance Learning!
Students went from a percentile ranking of 19
up to 42 at the end of the year.
• During this same year, students at Lexington
Elementary School in Monroe, Louisiana gained
an average of 13 percentile ranks as measured
by STAR Reading. Lexington Elementary students
also earned the 12th highest state test scores.
They were exceeded only by magnet schools and
schools with higher socioeconomic populations.
